2019 Southern Cross Short Story Competition Results

2019 BALLARAT SHORT STORY COMPETITION.

Ballarat Writers Inc. would like to thank everyone who submitted to the 2019 Southern Cross Short Story competition. The winners were announced at our final meeting for the year in November, and the winning entry was read aloud.

All cheques and certificates for the winners and honourable mentions are now in the mail. Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to everyone who entered this year. We received an overwhelming 170 entries to this year’s competition, and our pre-readers had their work cut out for them, not to mention our judge, Lee Kofman!

The Winners:
1st place – The Remains by Jacqueline Winn (you can read it here)
2nd place – Found by Jodie Kewley
3rd place – Nereus’s Daughter by Karen Hollands
Commendations: The Lottery by Jodie Kewley, and Whale Sharks by Suzi Green.

Judge’s Report

Our judge this year was Lee Kofman, who attended the presentation evening. Her report is available here.

Ballarat Writers would also like to extend an enormous thank you to Irene Warfe, who stepped in to oversee the Southern Cross Short Story Competition this year. Competitions like this take up a surprising amount of time for volunteer-run groups like ours, so thank you to Irene for helping us support the broader writing community for yet another year.
