Competitions

Ballarat Writers Inc gives writers recognition by hosting both the Southern Cross Short Story Competition and the Martha Richardson Memorial Poetry Prize. The competitions are run biennially.

Martha Richardson Memorial Poetry Prize (2014)

We are excited to announce that entries for the prize open 15 July! An entry form will be made available here soon.

First prize is $1,000. We welcome entries on any theme, up to 40 lines of original and unpublished work.

PeterBakowskiThis year the prize will be judged by renowned poet Peter Bakowski. Peter has been a regular to Ballarat this year, as a reading guest and to teach a workshop. Peter’s latest collection Personal Weather was released in May by Hunter Publishing.

Entries accepted until 15 October. $20 per entry. (Multiple accepted).

Southern Cross Short Story Competition (2013)

In 2013, Christine Fontana won the Southern Cross Short Story Competition with her story Slow Combustion.

On the shortlist were Emily Hitchman with Very Excellent Unsecret Gingerbread Recipe and Rebecca Howden with The Rocks.

Highly commended: Susan Yardley, Tattoo; Jessie Mitchell, The Last Philosopher

Entry is free but you must be a Ballarat Writers Member to enter.

The parameters for each month’s pieces are decided by those who attend the monthly readings sessions.
